"Tora! Tora! Tora!" was the same way and people didn't like that movie either though I hear part of that also had to do with racism. Both however were spectacular movies.Mohammad Khanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07888572655617880516noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5563274773990644148.post-14612727821218449672011-07-17T08:33:27.012-07:002011-07-17T08:33:27.012-07:00Good point. I liked the point about the depiction of the North as vulgar through the questionable characters of the Generals. I don't disagree with your argument that historical inaccuracy is likely the culprit, but the subject reminded me of a common American cinema thematic that I think might be in the mix as well. As Americans, with our traditional inferiority complex,we have always been attracted to stories that affirm the idea that "bad" people fighting the good fight will always prevail over the best of the best tied to a rotten cause. Think of a movie like the Dirty Dozen, for instance. Even criminality can earn absolution in the service of a righteous undertaking. On the other hand, personal quality (the sophistication of the villain in Inglorious Bastards is a good example) is of little redemptive value if it is committed to corrupt ends. With this in mind, I think this theme is at work when northern generals are portrayed as profligate in one way or another. Likewise, the nobility of the southern gentry will never elevate baseness of their cause.robotfuturehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03551619412670502723noreply@blogger.com
